Merry Christmas Hats (Free Pattern)

Ho, Ho, Ho, Ha, Ha, Hats!

The holiday season is the perfect time to use up scraps of leftover yarn. From ornaments to stocking stuffers, the possibilities are endless.

I decided to use my holiday yarn to make Christmas ornaments. After a little bit of experimentation, I came up with a pattern for a cute and quick Christmas Hat Ornament. The ribbed hat can be made in any color and can even be embroidered with initials to make family keepsakes.

I used DK weight yarn and my completed ornaments are about 3″ wide and 2″ tall without the poof. I can’t wait to gift some and hang others on our tree. I may embroider initials for my family since soon my teens will be grown and will need to have their own ornaments to take to their own homes and … *tears*

I digress.

In this season of giving, I wanted to give back to you and offer this pattern for free! You’ll find the complete pattern below.

Christmas Hat Ornament

Finished size: 3″ x 2″

Yarn: Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday DK (Note: You can use any scrap yarn. You will likely need around 25 yards per hat.)

Hook: 3.00 mm (This is not a lettered hook. It is between a C and D)

Gauge: Gauge is not important for this item. Use a hook size about three sizes smaller than the yarn calls for.

Abbreviations:

  • Ch—Chain
  • sc—single crochet
  • dc—double crochet
  • FPdc—Yarn over. Insert hook around stitch from front to back. Yarn over and pull up a loop. (Yarn over and pull through two loops) twice.
  • St—stitch
  • Sl st—slip stitch

Round 1: Ch 4. Sl st in first ch to form ring. Ch 3 (counts as first DC here and throughout). Dc 9 stiches in ring. Sl st to the top of the chain 3. (10 st)

Round 2: Ch 3. FPdc around ch just made (these are the first two stiches). (Dc in next st. FPdc around the same st) 9 times. Sl st to the top of the chain 3. (20 st)

Round 3: Ch 3. Dc in next st. FPdc around the FPdc. (Dc in next two st, FPdc around the FPdc in Round 2) 9 times. Sl st to the top of the chain 3. (30 st)

Rounds 4-7: Repeat Round 3. The work will start to form a cone (or a hat!). Fasten off and weave in ends.

Turn hat inside out!

Round 8: With constrasting color, join with a sl st to the last st in round 7. Ch 3, Dc in each st around. Sl st to top of ch 3. (30 st)

Round 9: Ch 1 and sc in same st as join. Sk 1 st, (5 dc in next st, sk 1 st, sc in next st) around. (You will have 2 st left over. I chose to add an additional 5 dc in the next st, but you can leave them out and just sl st to first st.)

Fasten off leaving at least a six-inch tail.

Turn hat right side out. Fold up the brim of the hat. Using a needle, sew the tail through and around the brim to tack it in place. Fasten off and weave in ends.

You now have a cute, little beanie that kind of looks like a hat, but now you need to add the poof which will take you to the finish line.

Make the Poof

Step 1: Wrap the yarn 6-8 times around your hand. Cut through one end.

Step 2: Using a 6″ piece of yarn, tie around the bundle of yarn in the middle. Thread the tied ends through a needle and pull through the top of the hat until the bundle is about 1/4 inch throuh.

Step 3: With the same yarn, weave through the underside of round 1 for a few stitches, weave through bundle of yarn, weave through a few more stiches and tie off. (This should keep it from coming out.)

Step 4: With the hat right side out, trim the yarn poof so that all of the yarn is approximately the same height.

To finish: Use a needle to thread a piece of yarn through the hat just behid the poof. Tie. Now you can hang it on the tree!

To mongram use contrasting yarn and freehand the initial. Make sure yarn is secured.
