Patriotic Star Square

I finally did it! I had a vision for a star square, and after a couple of weeks of working on it off and on, I’m finished! I can’t wait to make this patriotic square into a full blanket! Below is the free pattern. If you have any questions or find any errors, let me know. It’s a work in progress!

This pattern is for a 6″ square. You can use it for a variety of purposes.

Yarn: I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn in Aran, Claret, and Navy.

Round 2: Ch. 3 (Counts as first DC). DC in next 2 stitches. [Ch. 2, DC in next 3 stitches] 4 times. Ch. 2. Join with sl. st to the top of the Ch. 3. (5 3 DC groups, 5 ch. 2 spaces)

Round 3: Ch. 3. DC2Together over next two stitches. Ch. 3. FPSC in stitch from Round 1 in between the 3DC groups. (See picture below. Make sure to work in front of the ch. 2 space not over.) [Ch. 3. DC3Together over next three stitches. Ch. 3. FPSC in stitch from Round 1 between the 3 DC groups] 4 times. Ch. 3. Sl st. to top of first DC2T. (5 star points)

Note: At this point, your work will be curling up. You won’t think it’s right, but it is. It will straighten out in Round 7.

Round 4: [Ch. 3, sl. st in same space. Ch. 5. Sl. st in top of the next point] Repeat around star. Fasten off. (5 Ch. 5 spaces. 5 ch. 3 spaces)

Round 5: Note: This round is worked in the ch. 2 spaces from Round 2. You will crochet over the Ch. 5 spaces from Round 4. The picture below shows the work from the back, but you will still be working from the front.

Join with Standing DC in any Ch. 2 space of round 2. 5 DC in same space. Ch 1. Do not crochet in the tip of the star. The ch. 1 will fall behind the tip. [6 DC in ch. 2 space, ch 1) 4 more times. Join with sl. st. in the top of the Standing DC. Fasten off. (30 DC, 5 ch. 1 spaces).

Round 6: Join next color with Standing BPHDC around any DC from Round 5. BPHDC in each DC around putting 2 SC in each ch. 1 space. Make sure you do not crochet in the tips of the star. The 2 SC will fall behind the tip. Fasten off. (30 BPHDC, 10 SC; 40 total stitches)

Round 7: Join original color with Standing DC in any first BPHDC in group of 6. DC in next 5 BPHDC. DC in next SC. DC through tip into next SC. Make sure to make the DC through the star tip and SC of previous round. [DC in next 7 stitches. DC through start tip into the next SC] 4 more times. Join with Sl. st. to first stitch. Fasten off. (40 stitches)

Round 8: Join color 2 with Standing TC in any 3rd DC after the star tip. (Note: The joining spot is only important so all of the stars slant the same way). TC, ch. 2, 2 TC in the same stitch. Corner made. DC in next st. HDC in next st. SC in next 2 SC. FPSC around next st. (tip of star). SC in next 2 st. HDC in next st. DC in next st. [2 TC, ch. 2, 2TC] in next st. DC in next st., HDC in next st., FPSC around next st. SC in next 4 st. HDC in next st., DC, in next st. [2TC, ch. 2, 2 TC] in next st. FPDC around next st. HDC in next st. SC in next 5 st. HDC in next st. FPDC around next st. [2TC, ch. 2, 2 TC] in next st. DC in next st. HDC in next st. SC in next 4 st. FPSC in next st. HDC in next st. DC in next st. Join with sl. st. to first TC.

Note: Round 8 is basically made up of 2TC, ch. 2, 2TC corner, DC, HDC, 5 SC, HDC, DC, corner. The only thing that changes is that different stitches FP around the tip of the star.

Round 9: Ch. 2 (Counts as first HDC). HDC in next TC. [2HDC, ch. 2, 2HC] in corner space. HDC in each stitch across. Continue this pattern around. Fasten off.

Your square is done and should measure approximately 6 inches! The picture below shows the square with a cream border after it was joined.

I joined four squares together to show how they would look attached using a SC join. You could choose to join your squares in whatever way you prefer. I think these squares would also look nice with plain blocks between them or in different colors for a baby blanket.
