A Zig-Zag Here, a Border There

New yarns are coming out everyday.

I’m not sure if that’s true, but it sure seems like it. And I want them all!

If I buy new yarn, I can blog about it, thereby justifying the purchase. If I buy the same old yarn without a project in mind, I can’t justify that. Thank you new yarns.

Recently I found Loops & Threads Joy DK yarn. I fell in love with DK weight yarn this year. This yarn in particular has a soft hue and a soft texture. I am in love with this yarn. I picked up four skeins in Peach Frost (though there is not peach in it). Later I bought two more skeins in Cloud once I realized I would need a border.

So, I had the yarn, but what would I make. I tried to make a blanket out of puffy flowers. I tried to channel my creativity to come up with a pattern of my own. It was to no avail. I began scanning for a pattern I wanted to try. I happened upon the perfect one: the zig-zag puff stitch.

The zig-zag puff stitch was new to me, so I headed on over to YouTube to figure it out. I used this video to learn it!

It didn’t take long to get the hang of it, and before I knew it, I was well on my way.

I continued until I had used 3 1/4 skeins of yarn.

I suppose I should be happy I couldn’t find my border book when it came time for that part. I decided I needed a substantial border to offset the intricacy of the zig-zag pattern, so I started off on my own. I used one skein of the gray yarn. I thought I’d share a pattern of that border with you. It is easily customizable to any blanket.

Lattice Border

Round 1: Sc around the blanket with 3 sc in each corner. I did three sc per zig-zag on the top and bottom and 2 sc for each row going down the sides. Join with sl st to first sc. Sl st into corner.

Rounds 2-3: Ch 1. Sc in each stitch around with 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. Sl st into corner.

Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as first dc) in corner. 4 dc in same st. [Sk st, dc in next st. Working behind that stitch, dc in skipped st] to corner. 5 dc in corner. Repeat around the blanket. Join with sl st to first dc. Sl st into corner.

Round 5: Ch 2, 4 dc in same st. Dc in next st. (This allows the next row to be off set from the previous row.) . [Sk st, dc in next st. Working behind that stitch, dc in skipped st] to last st. Dc in last st. 5 dc in corner. Repeat around the blanket. Join with sl st to first dc. Sl st into corner.

Round 6: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st. Dc in next two st.  [Sk st, dc in next st. Working behind that stitch, dc in skipped st] to last 2 st. Dc in last 2 st. 3 dc in corner. Repeat around the blanket. Join with sl st to first dc. Sl st into corner.

Round 7-8: Ch 1, Sc in each stitch around with 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

I love this blanket. It’s one I will definitely repeat.
