Project Chemo Crochet

For a couple of hours every other month or so, ladies from my church have been getting together to crochet. It was something we talked about doing for months before it actually happened.

In fact, we noticed we had many crocheters in the congregation based on the number crocheting through Sunday school or the occasional metal hook that reverberated through the auditorium as it accidentally struck the floor.

A crochet club was the obvious next step.

For those few hours we get to unplug, get more acquainted with what is going on in each other’s livescommiserating and encouraging. It’s not overly planned. Someone opens their home (no preparation needed) to the others (come as you are). That’s it. Simple. And it works.

We bring our current project and stay for as long or as short as our schedule allows.

Recently though, we’ve come together to work toward a cause. One of the ladies sent a link to the group chat about Project Chemo Crochet. According to their website, ” PROJECT CHEMO CROCHET is a new initiative, started by the Pink Warriors, to crochet blankets to comfort chemo patients during treatment.  These homemade blankets are designed to make the patient feel safe and warm knowing that they are surrounded by the love of support of so many near and far.”

Project Chemo Crochet requests people to send in 9-inch granny squaresany design, any color. People can use up scrap yarn and give back to those in need.

Why not send completed blankets? I think the clue is in the mission: “the love of support of so many near and far.” The idea is that the chemo blankets that are given to comfort those going through some of their darkest times are made from people from all overpeople that thought about the struggle they are going through and prayed for their healing without even knowing their name.

Our group decided to take on the challenge. Our first box of 49 squares will be ready to go out sometime next week. That’s enough to make two entire blankets. But the squares won’t just appear in two blankets, they’ll appear in many. To see what the finished blankets look like, check out the gallery on their website or follow their Facebook page.
