Double Duty Dishcloth

I picked up some Peaches & Creme cotton yarn and Red Heart Scrubby yarn from Walmart the other day. I knew I’d be making dishcloths, I just didn’t know what they’d look like! Does that ever happen to you? Or do you only buy yarn when you have a project in mind? I think we all know how I shop.

My dishcloth didn’t come out at all like I imagined it, but I think it’s so much better.

The dishcloth itself has different stitches, to help get the grime of your dishes. As I was working up the scrubbie to go with it, I thought the yarn was too awesome to just sew to the back of the cloth as I intended.

Enter the dishcloth with a detachable scrubbie!

A simple button changed this run-of-the-mill dishcloth into an intriguing gift item.

An easy-to-print pattern can be purchase here for $1.99.

Double Duty Dishcloth

Yarn: I used Peaches & Creme cotton yarn for the dishcloth. About 3/4 of a skein. I also used Red Heart Scrubby yarn. One skein can make many scrubbies.

Hook: I-hook, 5.5 mm

Gauge: Gauge is not incredibly important for this project, but the whole dishcloth measures 9 inches. The scrubbie is about 3 inches.

Note: This pattern is worked in the round joining each row as you go.

Special stitches: Popcorn (PC) = 4 HDC in same stitch. Remove hook from last stitch. Insert into top of the first HDC. Insert hook into last HDC and pull through.

After 4HDC in one stitch, remove hook.
Insert hook through the top of the first HDC and into the loop from the last HDC.
Pull yarn through both loops. Do not ch. This stitch is done.

Fan stitch = 5 DC in same stitch.

Dishcloth: Use cotton yarn.

Round 1: Make Magic Circle. Ch. 2 (counts as first HDC here and throughout). 11 HDC in MC. Join with sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2. (12 HDC)

Round 1 completed.

Round 2: Ch. 2, hdc in the same st. as join. 2hdc in each stitch around. Join with sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2. (24 HDC)

Round 2 completed.

Round 3: Ch. 2. Working in Back Loops Only (BLO), hdc in the same st. as join. [hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st] around. hdc in the last st. Join with sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2. (36 HDC)

Round 3 completed.

Round 4: Ch. 2. Hdc in the same st. [hdc in next 2 stitches, 2hdc in next st.] around ending with hdc in last 2 stitches. Join with sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2. (48 HDC)

Round 4 completed.

Round 9: Ch. 2. Hdc in same st as join. [hdc in next 6 st., 2hdc in next st.] around ending with 3 hdc in last 3 stitches. Join with sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2.

Round 9 completed.

Round 10: Ch. 2, 4 dc in same st. (fan stitch made), [skip 1 stitch, sc in next st, sk 1 st, fan stitch (5 dc) in next st.] around. Place last sc equally between two fans. Join with sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2.

Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

You will need a small button, I used .5″. Secure to the center of the dishcloth.

Scrubbie: Use Red Heart Scrubby Yarn and I-hook.

Note: It is very hard to find previous stitches in this yarn, but it is also very forgiving. If you put a stitch slightly out of place, it won’t matter.

Round 1: Ch. 4. sl. st. to first stitch to form ring. (Note: It is important to do the chain here instead of a magic circle so that when you close it, enough space will be left for the button.) ch. 2, 11 hdc in ring. sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2. (12 HDC)

Round 2: Ch. 2, hdc in same st as join. 2 hdc in each st. around. Join with sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2. (24 HDC)

Round 3: Ch. 2, hdc in same st as join. [hdc in next st., 2 hdc in next st.] around. Join with sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2. (36 HDC)

Round 4: Ch. 2, hdc in same st as join. [hdc in next 2 st., 2 hdc in next st.] around. Join with sl. st. to the top of the first ch. 2. (48 HDC)

Fasten off yarn and weave in ends making sure not to sew over center circle.

Gently attach scrubbie to dishcloth on the button.

Ta-da! A double duty dishcloth!
