Winter Wonderland Scarf (free pattern)

One week ago, we were in the car driving from Kansas to Pennsylvania. Kansas (and much of the Midwest) had just been hit by a blizzard. Seriously, a blizzard. While the snow had just started when we left for church Sunday morning, by the time we returned to my in-laws two hours later, we could NOT even see the road. I have never driven in conditions like that before.

“I always thought that snow fell down!” I exclaimed to anyone who would listen. “Not in Kansas,” was the common response.

It wasn’t feeling like a winter wonderland then. It was feeling more like a winter nightmare as we drove over sheets of ice Monday morning on the long trip back home. Now, from the safety of that home, I can bask in all things winter. Thus the Winter Wonderland Scarf.

The Winter Wonderland Scarf pattern started as a test for a new blanket idea. The blanket will be coming soon, but in the meantime, practice up on this and the Winter Wonderland Hat.

Scarf

This pattern, which mimics Christmas trees, is worked with dc across the front (right) side and sc across the back (wrong) side. When working post stitches, those stitches go around the dc 2 rows down instead of the the row of sc directly below. This scarf is worked in two identical pieces and crocheted together in the center.

Notes:

  • Each row should have 23 st.
  • Ch 2 at the beginning of each row counts as a dc. (I use a ch 2 instead of ch 3 because it keeps the stitches tighter.)
  • Every even row is the same: 23 sc.
  • This pattern is written using motifs.

Stitches:

  • ch-chain
  • sc-single crochet
  • dc-double crochet
  • FPTC-front post triple crochet
  • FPDTC-front post double triple crochet
  • 5dcPopcorn-five double crochet popcorn

Yarn: 2 skeins of Herrschners Holiday Pastry Puff in Modern. Approximately 400 yards, so you’ll have a bit left over.

Hook: H-hook (5 mm)

Gauge: 16 st x 10 rows (alternating dc & sc) = 4″

Size: Scarf measures 64″.
