Modern Rainbow Baby Blanket (Paid Pattern)

Every baby is a gift.

A baby who was planned. A baby who was a surprise. A baby who was adopted.

This blanket honors all babies. Every single gift.

When this pattern was being conceived (see what I did there?), I had the rainbow first. These modern rainbows are everywhere these days and I wanted to make one using the corner-to-corner crochet method. But I wanted more than just a rainbow.

A rainbow is a sign of a promise, so I began looking up verses that had to do with promises and then verses that had to do with children.

I settled on 1 Samuel 1:27: “For this child I prayed.” Hannah had been waiting for a child for a long time, but had not been able to conceive. She prayed for the Lord to give her a child, vowing to give that child back to him. After the Lord gave her the long-awaited gift in Samuel, she gave him back to the Lord in service–an incredible sacrifice for a mother.

Samuel was a gift. Every child is a gift.

With this in mind, the Modern Rainbow Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern was born. (See, I did it again.) This pattern uses the corner-to-corner crochet (c2c) method with lots of color changes. It is an intermediate pattern, but comes with tutorials on the c2c method as well as connecting letters (blog post about that here). It is a pattern that will take you a few weeks to make (if you have a few hours a day to spend on it), but the end result is well worth it.

The pattern comes in two different versions: a bold version with bright colors and polka dots and a pastel version which has a slightly simpler pattern. But even though I’ve chosen colors, they could work with any color combination. I’d encourage you to pick your own. It could also be a good pattern to use as a stash buster.

I’ve also included two border options to chose from. While the c2c method makes clean edges, I think the blanket looks more complete when a border has been added. These borders are simple, but finish the blankets off well.

And it’s a blanket that will be treasured for years by anyone receiving it.
