A Year of Crochet, Progress, and Memories

When Robin and I started the “Crochet with Friends” segment of the blog, we had lofty expectations, but neither of us knew how it would go. We did not succeed in writing a blog post for every square, BUT we did both reach the goal of not only finishing our squares, but completing our blankets before the new year.

Robin’s gorgeous first finished Moogly CAL. Can you believe she barely knew how to crochet when we started?!

This was my 6th year completing the Moogly Crochet Along (CAL). I knew I could complete it, but this was not only Robin’s first time doing the CAL, but she was VERY new to crocheting all together.

Heidi’s florescent afghan completed.

“If you can crochet this, you can crochet anything.” This was the phrase I told her to convince her to join me. Here’s what she had to say about the experience:

Knowing that Heidi was working on this blanket helped keep me going. There may have been a time or two that I would have hung it up before I finished my blanket, but I did not want to let her down. As well as my husband would have never let me live down that I did not complete “his” blanket.

Next is the part that surprised me (Heidi) more than anything. Robin finished her squares, and it was time to join them. I had started to join mine by adding a black border and single crocheting them together, but that was not the join I wanted Robin to do. She needed a flexible join as her tension was looser at the beginning of the year than at the end. We couldn’t get together right away because of the horrid C-word (coronavirus), so I sent her a primer. That girl surprised me by getting her entire blanket put together ON HER OWN.

Heidi sent me a link with a video on a flatbraid join and I was off. It was December 22 when I put my first squares together. On the 23rd, I went over to visit Heidi to make sure I was doing it right. Early morning on the 24th I woke and finished the blanket before noon. The feeling of accomplishment washed over me. This was an incredible challenge, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn so much in one year.

What happens next? Here’s what Rah-Rah has to say: “Honestly, I was not sure if I would do the 2022 blanket. Then my sister wanted to join the party and make her own blanket too. I have decided to use green and white for 2022. Let the fun begin.”

Let the fun begin indeed.

This is Heidi and Robin signing off until next year (which is now). The first block of the 2022 Moogly CAL comes out on Thursday.
