The Hippie In Me

When I was in 8th grade the popular perfume was called Flower Power and it came in an aerosol can. We sprayed so much of that stuff on ourselves that I’m surprised I can smell anything else to this day. Those were the beginning of my hippie days.

In high school I grew my hair long wore platform shoes and bell bottoms (after swearing I never would). It wasn’t the 70s—it was the 90s and if I wasn’t a hippie, I was certainly a hippie wannabe.

In my middle-age early 40s now, there’s not much hippie left, but when I see something that says Flower Power, a switch turns on and I harken back to those hippie days.

Last year, the yearly Moogly CAL started with a block called Flower Power by Pink Mambo. I immediately made my square, then pulled the pattern back out and made a baby blanket with it. I absolutely love this square.

So when I found myself with some ends and full skeins of my Lion Brand Ice Cream Yarn, I decided to return to the block again. This time making a four x four baby blanket.

I know I say it all the time, but this just might be one of my favorite baby blankets of all time! I absolutely love how it turned out.

I used a simple slip stitch join to put the squares together. Then I needed to add a border. I wanted to mimic the flower petals, but it took some trial and error before I was able to transform them into a linear pattern vs flower pattern. In the end it worked well—and it was so FUN to use my problem solving skills to end up with what I wanted.

I can’t begin to tell you all of the yarns I used. I went through my jar of leftovers and pulled out those that felt and looked like they would go. Probably 90% of them are Lion Brand Ice Cream Yarn. The others might be some Mandala. The background color was Cookies & Cream.

In the end, I couldn’t be happier with how this one turned out. Both my girls are eyeing it up and hinting that they’d like to keep it, but I don’t know who will get it eventually. Whoever gets it, I hope they’ll connect with the power of the flower.
