The $5 Baby Blanket

One of the basic rules of business is to sell high, buy low.

I haven’t actually figured out how to make money in my crochet business yet, but I am at least aware of the basic principles. The less my yarn costs, the more potential I have to make a profit.

If you only crochet for gifting or charity purposes, it is still important to find the yarn that will give you the most bang for your buck.

Baby Cloudsoft yarn from Herrschners has fit the bill for me. On sale, which it regularly is, a bag of 10 skeins can be purchased for $9.90–that’s a little less than $1/skein. Not only is the price right, it really is cloud soft.

I found two free blanket patterns that take almost exactly five skeins.

One is my old favorite–the Call the Midwife Blanket. You’ve seen me use this one a lot lately. It is a beautiful, simple, and elegant pattern that is sure to please any gift recipient.

In order to make the blanket from only 5 skeins, you will need to simplify the border. I tried a scalloped border and only got 3/4 of the way around the blanket. In the end, I put 3 sc in each corner and 2 sc in each space all the way around. The pattern can also get by without any pattern.

The second pattern was talked about more in depth in this post, but it is the one I used for the other 5 skeins from my purchase. This was made using the Spin Me Around pattern by Catherine Bligh available here.

I can’t wait to order more yarn. Which pattern would you make?
