A Shawl for Fall

Our neighbors have sycamore trees. For some reason, sycamores start losing their leaves in August, but they never turn pretty. Just large, crunchy, brown leaves. Before the dog even barks to let us know a trespasser (someone just minding their own business walking down the sidewalk) is coming, we hear the crunch, crunch, crunch of leaves.

Many things make me think of fall (or autumn for you folks overseas). The start of the school year, the college band parade, and fall colors.

I didn’t mean to make a shawl out of fall colors, but I did. At least it gives me fall vibes.

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I started my Granny Square Gauntlet (a challenge to crochet 100 squares in 100 days from this book) a couple of weeks ago. Part of that challenge is that I have to turn the squares into 10 different projects with only one being allowed to be a blanket.

Project 3/10: Granny Square Shawl

The first thing I did for this project was to look up common dimensions for a rectangular shawl. My finished shawl fits within the parameters at approximately 22″ x 66″.

For this project I used 12 eleven-inch squares using Stylecraft Special DK Batik yarn (now discontinued). It also had some Stylecraft Special DK in parchment. I had more of some colors than others, but the squares came together to match without being boring or repetitive.

I arranged the squares in a pattern that I liked and sewed them together with a whipstitch join.

After joining them together, I had enough pink yarn left to finish the shawl with a simple border. I chose to do three single crochet, picot across adding an extra single crochet around the corners.

I love this shawl. If the yarn wasn’t discontinued, I would consider buying more for other squares and projects. Alas.

Unfortunately, as a woman in her forties, my temperature runs too warm for a heavy crochet shawl, but I know someone who routinely wears shawls and just had a birthday. This is the perfect gift.

If you haven’t seen the other projects that I’ve finished as part of the Granny Square Gauntlet, check out the bolster pillow here and the headscarf here. You can read more about the individual squares here and here.

What has been your favorite project so far? I’d love to hear your answer.

Keep stitching, Heidi
