In the words of the Steve Miller Band, “Time keeps on slippin’ into the future.”
It is October. I need to be done with my Granny Square Gauntlet by November 23. It is totally doable, but crunch time is nearing.
If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I started my Granny Square Gauntlet (a challenge to crochet 100 squares in 100 days from this book) in mid-July. Part of that challenge is that I have to turn the squares into 10 different projects with only one being allowed to be a blanket.
The posts about the squares for this project can be found here and here.

Project 6: Jewel-toned Shawl
This is my second shawl, but it is not the same as the first! This shawl uses 9″ and 12″ squares. I blocked the squares before I joined them and they fit together like a glove…or shawl.
The yarn I used for this project was leftover yarn and stash yarn. Stash yarn is yarn I had purchased previously but not yet used. That meant I had many full skeins allowing for a color-coordinated project of this size.
Speaking of size, the finished shawl measures 72″ x 21″. It is a great size for cuddling up on these cool fall days. So warm. So cuddly.
I used Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran in a variety of colors, mostly grays and jewel tones and an H-hook (5mm).
Remember that green yarn I was worried about? I think it blends in just fine in the end. What do you think?
The squares were sewn together with a simple slip stitch and bordered with a single crochet.
If you make something like this and don’t want to use it as a shawl, it could be used as a bedspread contrast. You know, like you find in hotels, where they just drape a contrasting material (Google just told me it’s called a bed runner) over the foot of the bed to make it seem like their bedding is unique even though it’s really just a white comforter that washes easily…
This shawl is really versatile.
I really am excited to be learning about so many different uses for granny squares. This one was a fast and easy project.

Which one of these projects would you consider making? Let me know in the comments.
Keep stitching (I know I will), Heidi
