Crochet Challenges

Gliding through Granny Square Gauntlet

This week’s number is seven. Seven point five to be exact. I finished seven squares and got halfway through the eighth this week.

If this is your first time reading about my current crochet challenge, make sure you go back and read this post for a refresher of my self-imposed rules. As I post each square, I will post the name and difficulty rating given to each square by Diana Krenz in her book 100 Vibrant Granny Squares, which I’m using for this challenge. Then I will give my difficulty rating and notes about the yarn I used and any new stitches, etc., that I encounter. See squares 1-2 here and squares 3-5 here and 6-11 here and 12-19 here and 20-25 here and 26-31 here and 32-40 here and 41-46 here and 47-50 here and 51-52 here and 53-55 here and 56-66 here.

This week I’ve been using Himalaya Baby DK yarn in five different colors. I bought this yarn on clearance a while ago and it is no longer available.

Each of the squares ended up measuring about 9.5″. These squares will likely become a baby blanket. I’m finally cashing in my blanket card.

Ella Square (67/100)

Difficulty rating: Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3

Yarn: Himalaya Baby DK in five colors

Hook: H (5mm)

Elise Square (68/100)

Difficulty rating: Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3

Yarn: Himalaya Baby DK in five colors

Hook: H (5mm)

Jasmin Square (69/100)

Difficulty rating: Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3

Yarn: Himalaya Baby DK in five colors

Hook: H (5mm)

Max Square (70/100)

Difficulty rating: Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3

Yarn: Himalaya Baby DK in five colors

Hook: H (5mm)

This square was unique by including the wavy row (light blue, second to last of the circle). It was last used in the Rebecca Square. It is a very fun texture. This is a very texture-rich square.

Felicitas Square (71/100)

Difficulty rating: Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3

Yarn: Himalaya Baby DK in five colors

Hook: H (5mm)

This lightweight yarn sits well. I don’t know how to explain that terminology. The stitches combined with the pattern sits flat, light, and is the perfect weight.

If you’ve been waiting for a square to beat me, this one did! I got about 10 rows in and I had a triangle instead of a square. I had to start over because I only had six petals when I was supposed to have eight. I left off the last row for size.

Jophiel Square (72/100)

Difficulty rating: Extra Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3

Yarn: Himalaya Baby DK in five colors

Hook: H (5mm)

I’m not sure what part of this square takes it to the extra advanced level. I don’t think there were any new stitches, so I kept my difficulty level at 3.

Little Amy Square (73/100)

Difficulty rating: Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3

Yarn: Himalaya Baby DK in five colors

Hook: H (5mm)

I’ve really been looking forward to making this square. Partly because it’s called Little Amy and my sister’s name is Amy. Of course, my sister is older than me, but that’s beside the point.

This square started with a new technique of making a puff stitch. It was just a treble crochet, but was combined with sc to make it puff up.

Those are my squares this week. They would all benefit from some blocking, but it might not be necessary for a blanket.

It is unreal to me that I am almost 75% through this challenge.

Keep stitching, Heidi
