I feel like I’m cashing in my wild card this week. The wild card is the blanket card…arguably the easiest project to accomplish with granny squares.
But being easy doesn’t make it boring.
If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I started my Granny Square Gauntlet (a challenge to crochet 100 squares in 100 days from this book) in mid-July. Part of that challenge is that I have to turn the squares into 10 different projects with only one being allowed to be a blanket.
The posts about the squares for this project can be found here and here.

Baby Blanket
For this blanket I used 16 squares measuring about 9.5 inches each which were crocheted using Himalaya Baby DK yarn (now discontinued) in five colors and an H-hook (5 mm). The finished blanket measures around 42″ square.
I chose to join these squares with a flat braid join, which is easy and versatile and allows for some small differences in the sizes of the squares. (You can find many examples of how to do the flat braid join by searching it on YouTube.)
A blanket as fancy and intricate as this begged for a fancy border. I ended up doing four rounds.

Round 1:Put 3 sc in each ch 3 space around with sc, ch 1, sc in each corner.
Round 2: Join color B in corner sp. Ch 1, [[(sc, ch 1, sc) in corner space. Sc in next three sc. Dc in skipped stitch two rows below on the original square. Sk st behind dc] repeat until last 3 stitches. Sc in last 3 st]] then repeat [[ to ]] three more times.
Round 3: Join color C in corner sp. Ch 1, [[(sc, ch1, sc) in corner space. Sc in next three sc. Tc in skipped st three rows below on the original square. Sk st behind tc] repeat until last 3 stitches. Sc in last 3 st]] then repeat [[ to ]] three more times.
Round 4: Join Color D in corner sp. Ch 3. In same sp dc 3, picot, dc 4. [Sc in next tc. (4dc, picot, 4dc) in next tc] around making sure to put a petal in each corner.
With the intricacy of the squares, this was far from an easy project, but assembling the squares was easy.
What is your favorite way to join squares in a blanket?

Make sure to check out the other six projects here, here, here, here, here, and here.
Keep stitching, Heidi
