(27) Ninety-Six Percent through the Gauntlet

Ninety-six percent is a seriously good grade. Most people would accept it in a heartbeat.

Not the Granny Square Gauntlet. I can accept no less than 100%… and I’m so close!

This week I added six more squares! All of these squares would benefit from blocking, but I did not take the time to do it this week. Maybe before they become the project they are going to become.

If this is your first time reading about my current crochet challenge, make sure you go back and read this post for a refresher of my self-imposed rules. As I post each square, I will post the name and difficulty rating given to each square by Diana Krenz in her book 100 Vibrant Granny Squares, which I’m using for this challenge. Then I will give my difficulty rating and notes about the yarn I used and any new stitches, etc., that I encounter. See squares 1-2 here and squares 3-5 here and 6-11 here and 12-19 here and 20-25 here and 26-31 here and 32-40 here and 41-46 here and 47-50 here and 51-52 here and 53-55 here and 56-66 here and 67-73 here and 74-82 here and 83-86 here and 87-90 here.

Serenity Square (91/100)

Difficulty rating: Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3.5

Yarn: Herrschners 2-ply Baby Yarn in various colors

Hook: D (3 mm)

This square uses the same stitches we’ve already learned. I really liked that there were three rounds in the background that didn’t change color. It’s nice to have a few less ends to weave in.

I did note on this pattern that it was the first in a while that fit on two pages of the book instead of three or four.

Fearless Square (92/100)

Difficulty rating: Extra Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3.5

Yarn: Herrschners 2-ply Baby Yarn in various colors

Hook: D (3 mm)

I enjoyed the many different textures of this square. The difficulty rating went back up because of the amount of detail, especially in the corners. Color placement has been a little more difficult with these colors, but this works. I tried to keep the white where there was white in the original pattern.

Mariko Square (93/100)

Difficulty rating: Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3.5

Yarn: Herrschners 2-ply Baby Yarn in various colors

Hook: D (3 mm)

This square has so many different points of interest. I really enjoyed it. It will definitely benefit from blocking as the tightness of my stitches has caused it to cup a little. I will never not be amazed at the amount of work that must go into each of these patterns to make sure the stitches fit together well and that the patterns are written correctly.

Speechless Square (94/100)

Difficulty rating: Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3.5

Yarn: Herrschners 2-ply Baby Yarn in various colors

Hook: D (3 mm)

I might like the color placement the best on this square. There’s enough bright and light, and they’re not competing. Does this square render you speechless?

Barbara Square (95/100)

Difficulty rating: Extra Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3.5

Yarn: Herrschners 2-ply Baby Yarn in various colors

Hook: D (3 mm)

There are a few things I really like about this square. One is the purple round just outside the flower that reminds me of a men’s lapel. Another is that it sits nice and flat. Even though it looks complicated, it is still a very straight forward square.

Wanderlust Square (96/100)

Difficulty rating: Extra Advanced

My Rating (1-5): 3.5

Yarn: Herrschners 2-ply Baby Yarn in various colors

Hook: D (3 mm)

Just take a minute to stare at this square. Appreciate the complexity and beauty. I think this is one of my all-time favorites from this book. My favorite parts are the inner corner fans worked in the same stitch as the white center but giving an entirely new vibe.

So, there you have it. Ninety-six squares done. I should be able to finish the squares this coming week and can concentrate on finishing the last few projects.

Squares finished: 96/100

Projects finished: 8/10

Yarn purchased for the Granny Square Gauntlet: 0%

Keep stitching, Heidi
